Downloading large files from VST & VSTi maker UVI just got easier & hopefully others take notice!
I live in Brazil and, let’s just say, internet connectivity can be spotty… really spotty. I also work professionally with music and film, which means I need to download more than my-fair-share of large files. Those two things combined make for some seriously frustrating days of attempting to download needed files.
I have been telling the people at Ableton, for example, that they should be implementing a torrent downloading system, or using a third party downloader like Continuata. Having to attempt multiple downloads of the same large file because the internet connection had a quick hiccup is a PAIN IN THE ASS.
Torrenting is the obvious go to.
Downloading programs like qBittorrent are free and open source. Downloading via a program like that means you can stop, start, interrupt, shut down the computer, and the files will still be downloaded completely in the end without having to restart the process.
I am going to be checking out UVI’s UVS-3200, a tribute to the Korg PS-3200, and while I was on the download page I noticed that another one of my available downloads, the Synth Anthology II, has a torrent option for download!!
That’s awesome! Synth Anthology II is a 7.4 GB .zip file. The UVS-3200, Thorus, or the UVI Workstation don’t seem to have the torrent option, but those aren’t super large. The biggest of the three being UVS-3200 coming in at 1.5 gigs.
This needs to be implemented across the board. With all the checks and balances, like iLok, there is no reason not to be using torrent systems for large downloads. Also, getting past the stigma people have about Torrents in general needs to happen sooner rather than later.
I applaud UVI and hope others take notice and get on board.
**Update** Shortly after posting this article I was contacted by UVI. I somehow missed that there is the torrent option for most of the other packs on their site. By clicking the “Primary” drop down menu, next to the Download button, you can choose the torrent file option. They only put the large notice next to the large files.
So, now that I stand corrected, I am even more excited!!
