You have 3 choices for emulating Amiga machines on your computer:

  • Amiga Forever: easy to use Amiga emulator for Windows only, costs $10 to $50 and contains a legal Amiga Kickstart ROM to play your favourite games immediatly.

One important note about Amiga Kickstart ROM: these ROMs are necessary programs to boot the Amiga emulator and are copyrighted. Having the right kickstart ROM will allow you to emulate games in an optimal way. You have 3 choices to get these needed ROMs:

  • Buy the Amiga Forever emulator, which comes with a licensed Kickstart ROM
  • Extract the Kickstart ROM from your own Amiga computer, as explained on Amiga Legal Emulation
  • Find websites with downloadable ROMs on the internet, using Google, Bing or Yahoo.

There are several Kickstart ROM available, you should choose one, depending on the Amiga computer you wish to emulate, by following this FS-UAE tutorial. Once you've got your own Amiga Kickstart ROM, you can play Amiga games on your computer.

FS-UAE have built-in recoded kickstart ROMs, you can try running games using these first getting the real ROMs.

Running Amiga games in FS-UAE

Download and unzip the games file downloaded from My Abandonware or another site. Many archives contain several version the game, try to run the one that works the best. After unzipping the game archive, you'll get a .adf (Amiga Disk File) file, a standard file format used by UAE emulators.

Step 1

After the first launch FS-UAE Launcher, you'll get this screenshot. This first screen allows you to quickly run games without fiddling the options.

Step 2

Select the Amiga computer you want to emulate. You may try several of them before finding one that will run the game well. You can try with the modern Amiga at the end of the list.

Click on the right icon for the first floppy drive, find the .adf file of the game archive you unzipped before. You'll see the file in the white field after selecting it.

Step 4

Once this is done, you should have this screen, you can click on 'Start'.

Step 5

The Amiga emulator will start and show you a desktop with the content of the floppy disk visible. You'll have to choose a program to run then. Enjoy!

Some games have multiple disks, you will have to add multiple disks in the floppy disk menu. You can configure up to 4 .adf files in the floppy drives. If more than 4 floppies are required, press F12 (Mac OS X: cmd-fn-F12) to bring the emulator menu and change the .adf used in any of the 4 floppy drives. Introduction To Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to get a copy of the Amiga Kick.ROM image(s) the legal way. As the Amiga Kick.ROM is still under copyright and due to Amiga Technologies demanding that anyone distributing these files ceases doing so imediately we cannot disclose information on how to illegally find these files OR distribute them through ALE.

The KICK.ROM file is required by all current Amiga emulators and can be classed as the brains of the Amiga. So why and what does it do? this rom is stored on a tiny crystal on the main Amiga board (usually 512Kbs) and controls all the devices connected both internally and externally to the Amiga computer - without this crystal the Amiga wouldn't work. It's pretty easy to see why people who download WinUAE without the kick.rom are having problems getting programs to run.


Requirements

You will need the following to follow this tutorial:

  • A real Amiga computer (A500+/A600/A1200)
  • Workbench 2.0+
  • CrossDOS
  • TransROM (comes with WinUAE)

Guide

Now this is pretty simple but also easy to mess up - don't worry it won't damage your Amiga.

First of all you will need to copy the TransROM executable from your WinUAE directory onto a 720KB formatted PC disk - if you don't have access to any 720KB disks then grab a 1.44 and cover then non-tabbed side of the disk, now format it as a 720KB floppy and bingo.

Now you will need to fire up the real Amiga and insert your Workbench disks, Once Workbench has loaded double click the Workbench disk and open the System folder now double click Shell or CLI (depending on your version of Windows).

Remember that file you copied to the 720KB formatted disk? this file then needs transferring over to your real Amiga so in the AmigaShell type:

  • Mount PC0:

Insert the disk with TransROM on into your internal Amiga drive, which can now read and write to/from 720KB PC disks and type:

  • PC0:
  • COPY TRANSROM RAM:

Now we need to rip the Kick.ROM and store it on your RAM drive (easy access). So type the following in the AmigaShell window:

  • RAM:
  • TRANSROM RAM:KICK.ROM

Your Amiga will be busy for a few seconds depending on the model you are ripping from. You should now find a file named KICK.ROM in the RAM drive - this file needs to be transferred from the RAM drive to your PC, this is were CrossDOS comes in handy.

In the AmigaDOS Shell type:

  • RAM:
  • COPY KICK.ROM PC0:

Bingo!, one KICK.ROM copied to your PC disk - simply insert this disk back into your PC and copy the KICK.ROM to your WinUAE directory.

Note: The above tutorial is designed for use on machines with Kickstart 2.0 and above only.
